What they’ll learn
Songwriting at CBY gives students the tools to shape their original ideas into finished songs. Students learn how melody, lyrics, chords and structure work together, then use them to write music that’s genuinely their own.
It’s a wonderfully creative, confidence-building program that also deepens musicianship: by writing songs, students come to understand music from the inside out. Lessons flex to each young writer; some arrive with a notebook full of lyrics, others with just a melody stuck in their head! Regardless, every one leaves with real songs they created.

Performances & opportunities
Songwriting students at CBY have a range of opportunities throughout the school year.
Artist development
Whether performing an original song or a carefully chosen cover song, students work closely with our teachers to bring their music to life through a professional studio recording. Students can go even further with a promotional photoshoot, music video and custom artwork, resulting in a rich, creative project they can be proud of.
Students can even choose to release their recording on all major streaming platforms through our record label, or simply keep it as a personal milestone. Those who release their song commercially get a spot on our wall of fame with a framed commemorative plaque to celebrate their achievement.
Gigs
Throughout the year, students have opportunities to perform at live events across Waterdown, Hamilton and beyond. From community celebrations and BIA events to festivals and local live music venues, these performances give students valuable stage experience while helping them build confidence and connect with new audiences.
Whether performing original music or well-loved covers, it’s a fantastic way to develop as a live musician, begin building a fan base and become part of the local music community.
Concerts
Every CBY student is invited to perform for family and friends at our two biggest events of the year, the Winter Concert in December and the End of Year Concert in June. It’s a chance to showcase what they’ve learned and celebrate together. Oftentimes, the CBY Concerts provide a safe space for songwriting students to perform their compositions to a live audience for the first time, a valuable platform for any budding songwriter!

What it costs
Every lesson is one-to-one and runs for 60 mins each week. Pick your preferred night below and we’ll show the monthly tuition for that day.
