Overview

What they’ll learn

Singing is where most young performers first find their confidence, and our voice lessons are built to grow it song by song. Students learn healthy vocal technique from the very start: breathing, posture, pitch, tone and range, all taught at their own pace so the voice develops safely.

From there it becomes about expression: phrasing, dynamics, storytelling and stage presence. Your child will build a repertoire they love, from musical theatre numbers to favourite pop songs, jazz standards to folk classics, and learn to truly perform them, not just sing them. Every lesson is tailored to the student, whether they’re a shy beginner or an experienced singer preparing for solos and auditions.

Performances & opportunities

Voice students at CBY have a range of opportunities throughout the school year.

Exams

We offer the exam curricula of Conservatory Canada, RCM and RSL, so students can work toward a recognised qualification in the style that suits them. Conservatory Canada and RSL are our contemporary streams, ideal for singers who love pop, rock, soul, jazz and more, while the RCM is our classical curriculum.

🎓 98% of our exam-track students earn a First Class with Honours (80% or higher).

🏅 Several CBY students have won the Conservatory Canada “Medal of Excellence,” awarded for the highest exam grades in Ontario at their level.

Competitions

Each year, voice students can take part in the Oakville Vocal Arts Festival, with many progressing to the Ontario Music Festivals Association provincial competition. It’s a great way to take on a challenge, gain real performance experience and build their music credentials.

Youth Choir

Corovox (Latin for “voices from the heart”) is our youth choir, a fun and vibrant group of standout singers invited to join as academy ambassadors. They rehearse weekly, then perform around the community at events like the town Christmas tree lighting and the Farmers’ Market opening, and record a single each year that’s released on all major streaming platforms.

Concerts

Every CBY student is invited to perform for family and friends at our two biggest events of the year, the Winter Concert in December and the End of Year Concert in June. It’s a chance to showcase what they’ve learned and celebrate together.
